Training routines to improve your golf swing

The swing is the heart of the game. Mastering it not only improves your accuracy and distance, but also helps you enjoy golf more, reduce errors and build confidence with every shot. But like everything in this sport, it takes consistency, technique… and the right routines. In this article, you’ll discover how to improve your swing through practical and effective training exercises you can use on the course, at home or at the Vall d’Or Golf practice area.

1. Specific warm-up: the step most golfers skip

Before you think about swinging, your body needs to warm up. A 10–15 minute dynamic warm-up activates the key muscles and prevents injuries. What should you include?

  • Torso twists with your golf club
  • Shoulder and back stretches
  • Gentle squats and hip rotations

Good mobility increases your range of motion and makes your swing smoother from the very first hole.

2. Drills to improve swing technique

A proper routine should focus on quality of movement, not just repetition. Here are some essentials:

  • Towel drill: Place a towel under your arms as you swing to keep your arms connected to your torso. Great for improving control and coordination.
  • Pause at the top of your backswing: Swing slowly and stop for a second at the top. This helps you check your body position and build muscle memory.
  • Half swings for precision: Forget distance—focus on clean, controlled half swings. It’s all about rhythm and consistency.
  • Set clear targets: Place a towel, cone, or tee a few metres away and try to hit towards it. Visual targets are key to improving shot accuracy.

3. Strengthen your body off the course

A strong swing begins with a strong body. Focus on your core strength, leg stability, and shoulder mobility. Try these exercises:

  • Rotating planks
  • Dumbbell deadlifts
  • Lateral lunges
  • Resistance band shoulder stretches

You don’t need fancy equipment—just commitment. These movements can make a big difference the next time you step onto the course.

4. Make the most of the driving range

Nothing replaces hitting real golf balls. At Vall d’Or Golf’s driving range, with 200 metres of length and 18 hitting bays, you’ll find the perfect place to put your routine into action.

We suggest block training: 15 balls with a 7-iron, 10 with a driver, 15 with a wedge… each block with a different goal—technique, distance, or accuracy. Don’t just hit balls: make every swing count.

5. Train with a pro

While solo practice helps, nothing beats the trained eye of a coach. At Vall d’Or Golf, our PGA Pro Antonio González Tomé tailors each lesson to your level, correcting details you may not even notice. Just one session a week can have a huge impact on your progress.
